This Week in ACC Men’s Golf: Spring Season Underway

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – The 2024 Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Golf season began on Monday, January 29, when Wake Forest teed off at the Southwestern Invitational and Louisville opened at the Sea Best Invitational.

The Cardinals took home third at the 15-team Invitational in Pone Verda Beach, Florida, as freshman Cooper Claycomb carded a personal best 5-under-par in the final round to tie for seventh in the final standings. Teammate Max Kennedy joined Claycomb in seventh as the duo finished the event at 1-over.

The Demon Deacons placed eighth at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, California, as Daniel Sheedy and Scotty Kennon tied for 13th at 3-under-par in the final standings.

On Saturday, Clemson and Virginia will open their respective seasons at the Thomas Sharkey Individual Collegiate in Statesboro, Georgia, for a two-day event. Monday begins the Battle at Briar’s Creek in Johns Island, South Carolina, and will feature the Tigers, Boston College and Virginia Tech.

The ACC is coming off a strong fall season in which six league members combined to win eight team tournament titles – Duke (1 – Rod Myers Invitational), Florida State (1 – Jackson T. Stephens Cup), North Carolina (3 – Olympia Field/Illini Invitational, Williams Cup, East Lake Cup), Notre Dame (1 – Folds of Honor Collegiate), Virginia (1 – Golf Club of Georgia Invitational) and Wake Forest (1 – Highlands Invitational).

ACC Notes
  • With the spring season getting underway new rankings were announced on Wednesday by Scoreboard powered by Clippd. In the team rankings, five ACC teams are in the top 25 with North Carolina leading the way at No. 2. Georgia Tech is No. 11, Florida State is No. 12, Virginia is No. 13 and Duke is No. 25.
 
  • In the latest individual rankings, three ACC players rank in the top five, as Georgia Tech's Christo Lamprecht is the top ranked ACC player at No. 2. The North Carolina duo of David Ford and Maxwell Ford follow at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively. Louisville's Sebastian Moss is No. 17 and GT's Kale Fontenot is No. 23 to round out the top 25.
 
  • In the latest PGA TOUR University rankings, seven ACC players are in the top 25 with four in the top 10. Georgia Tech’s Christo Lamprecht leads the way at No. 2, while North Carolina’s Austin Greaser is No. 5, Wake Forest’s Michael Brennan is No. 9 and UNC’s Dylan Menante is No. 10. Florida State’s trio of Frederik Kjettrup, Cole Anderson and Brett Roberts is No. 11, No. 16 and No. 21, respectively.
 
  • Georgia Tech’s Christo Lamprecht and Louisville’s Sebastian Moss are the only two players in the top 25 of the latest Scoreboard Rankings that won two fall tournaments. Lamprecht took medalist honor at the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational while Moss took home the individual title at the Bearcat Invitational and Rod Myers Invitational.
 
  • The Final Fall Watch List for the Fred Haskins Award was announced on Thursday and four ACC golfers were honored: David Ford (North Carolina), Maxwell Ford (North Carolina), Christo Lamprecht (Georgia Tech) and Sebastian Moss (Louisville).
 
  • Georgia Tech claimed the 2023 ACC Men’s Golf Championship a season ago, downing Wake Forest 3-2 in the match play final. Senior anchor Ross Steelman secured the title for the Yellow Jackets by sinking a 25-foot birdie putt on No. 16 for a match-clinching 3&2 win over the Demons Deacons' Andrew McLauchlan.
 
  • Wake Forest junior Michael Brennan nailed down a hard-fought individual title at the 2023 ACC Men’s Golf Championship. Brennan birdied the third playoff hole, slipping past Georgia Tech’s Hiroshi Tai after the players battled to a tie at the conclusion of 54 holes of stroke play competition.
 
  • Nine ACC teams earned bids to the NCAA Regionals, with five – Duke, Florida State, Georgia Tech, North Carolina and Virginia – advancing to the NCAA Championship in Scottsdale, Arizona. It marked the 16th time in the last 17 years of NCAA competition that at least eight ACC teams earned a regional bid.
 
  • ACC teams formed half the field for the eight-team match play semifinal at the NCAA Championship, with Florida State, Georgia Tech, North Carolina and Virginia all advancing. Georgia Tech won the lone head-to-head matchup – defeating nationally second-ranked North Carolina 3-2 in the semifinal, before falling 3-2 to Florida in the national championship match.
 
  • North Carolina had led the stroke play competition leading into match play. The Tar Heels’ four-day total of 1,114 broke the UNC record for the lowest 72-hole total in an NCAA Championship by 20 strokes (1,134 in 2022). Georgia Tech placed fifth in the NCAA stroke-play finals, while Florida State was sixth and Virginia seventh.
