GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina's Tim Fedroff and Maryland's Scott Swinson were tabbed for the season's final Atlantic Coast Conference baseball honors. Fedroff received the nod for Player of the week, while Swinson earned Pitcher of the Week.
Fedroff sparked the Tar Heels as they closed the regular season by winning two of three games at No. 1 Miami, batting .429 (6-for-14) with two home runs, seven RBI and three runs scored. The sophomore outfielder, who finished with a .929 slugging percentage against the Hurricanes, went 3-for-5 with a two-run homer that lifted North Carolina to a 9-0 lead in Friday's second game. On Saturday, Fedroff went 2-for-5 and drove in five runs with a two-run double in the fourth inning and a three-run homer in the fifth. The Flagtown, N.J., native's home run ultimately proved the difference as the No. 2 Tar Heels posted a 12-11 victory.
Swinson, a sophomore righthander from Ellicott City, Md., pitched the sixth no-hitter in school history Tuesday as Maryland blanked border rival Delaware, 4-0, to clinch the program's second 30-win season. Swinson struck out a career-high 10 batters and allowed only three runners while facing two batters over the minimum. The effort came against a Delaware team that entered the game ranked among the nation's top 40 teams in doubles and home runs and in the top-50 in slugging percentage. Swinson posted his second complete-game victory of the season and recorded the first solo no-hitter by a Maryland pitcher since 1992.
The 35th Annual Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Championship gets under way Wednesday (May 21) at the Baseball Grounds in Jacksonville, Fla. The five-day event will conclude with Sunday's 1 p.m. championship game.
