Quotes from Virginia vs. Clemson

Nov. 1, 2006

Clemson Head Coach Trevor Adair

"We made a couple mistakes on a slick surface. They buried them and that's credit to them. We hit the crossbar, had some chances, you need to put them away and it just didn't go our way."

On expectations coming in:

"I mean, just the same as any other team coming in here. Any one of the nine teams could've won this. Now you have to look at it like we get an extra little bit of rest for the NCAA's. It wasn't meant to be. I was proud to have my kids - they fought hard, they didn't give up, created some chances but it just wasn't there tonight."

"I thought Frederico Moojen played well. Overall as a team, Phil Marfuggi kept us in the game, great senior leader, just a great goalkeeper. Overall, I was proud of how the kids fought. They kept their composure. That's the way it crumbles."

Virginia Head Coach George Gelnovatch

"We are glad to be where we are as opposed to where we were last year. Clemson was a good team last year, as they are this year. Just to get the win - we are obviously happy to be where we are."

How much did last year's loss serve as motivation?

"Not so much the team we played against, but it was the way we lost. We've reflected back to the loss in the ACC Tournament as a reference point for the last year. We had to get better, all the little intangibles of the team and the guys responded."

How concerned were you after the 2-0 lead?

"Well, Clemson is very effective in what they do. They keep you in your half with long throw-ins, free kicks. They have a couple of dangerous forwards and are very good about getting numbers in the box. I don't think we will see a team like that left in the ACC Tournament in terms of the fast restarts and the throw-ins. It prepares you like a functional training period for dealing with that stuff and I told the guys, particularly in the second half that they dealt with it pretty well."

How important was it that your top players played well together?

"I think they would tell you the same thing. I don't think it's about those guys doing anything special. We concentrate on playing as a team, those guys are great and they deserve all of the recognition that they receive, but we are a team. This was one of the things

Virginia Forward #9 Adam Cristman

What were the feelings of your lead in the game?

"As soon as we scored those two goals, we kind of sat back a little more, going into a kickball kind of mode. It disrupted the normal soccer flow of the game, but it is tough to defend especially because they're so effective at it. It was a good exercise for our entire team to remain really focused but it's difficult when there are long throw-ins and the balls bouncing around in the box, but it's good practice to have our team play together."

Tell us about your goal (2nd of the game)

"Johnson kicked up the ball, and I was able to make a diagonal run at the goal, it was a great one touch, and the goalie came out. I was able it play it on the ground and it just went right under his hand and foot."

Virginia Forward #11 Yannick Reyering

Tell us about your goal (1st of the game).

"Nico flipped the ball up, usually it's not the way I score goals. I was a great ball in and I was one on one with the keeper and it went in."

How much was last years game vs. Clemson in your head today?

"The entire team learned from last years loss to Clemson in the ACC tournament, we were happy to face them in the 1st round again and we were able to give it back to them. But during the game it was not in my head."
