Kara Baldy Sends NC State to Overtime Victory over Wofford
RALEIGH, N.C. – Kara Baldy made the first game at the NC State Soccer Stadium a successful one for the Wolfpack with an overtime goal in the 97th minute to upend Wofford, 1-0, Friday night. After 90 minutes of play that was dominated throughout by NC State (1-0), all it took was for senior Lindsay Vera to shake a defender and find Baldy on the left side and she did the rest of the work. Tami Krzeszewski also picked up an assist on the game’s deciding play.
Sadow’s Goal Lifts Deacs to 2-1 Overtime Win WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Allie Sadow scored in the eighth minute of the first overtime to lift the 21st-ranked Wake Forest women’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Utah in the season opener for both teams. “I thought we dictated the play from the beginning to the end,” head coach Tony da Luz said. “We got caught ball watching on the goal that they scored. We had a great response after that goal and we had most of the game under control.”
Tiger Women’s Soccer Team Opens Season with Win Over Alabama-Birmingham CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson women’s soccer team opened the 2008 season with a 1-0 victory over Alabama-Birmingham on Friday night at Riggs Field. It was the first career win for first-year head coach Hershey Strosberg. Freshman Tara Cort scored the game’s lone goal in the first half of play, also notching the first goal of her career. In the 28th minute, junior Molly Franklin played the ball across the front of the goal to Cort, who shot the ball into the net past the Blazer keeper from seven yards out.
Cavaliers Top Loyola 4-0 in Season Opener CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 7 Virginia women’s soccer team opened up its 2008 season with a 4-0 victory over Loyola (Md.) Friday night at Klöckner Stadium. Kelly Quinn (Dublin, Ohio) had her first multi-goal game of her career, scoring twice to lead the Cavaliers to their ninth consecutive season opening win. “This was a good result for us,” said head coach Steve Swanson. “Coming into the first game of the season, you are always a little concerned. We knew that Loyola had a good team with a lot of returning players and having played here in the NCAA Tournament last year that they wouldn’t be intimidated by the environment. We controlled the game early but it took us a while to get the first goal. The second one, with 16 seconds left in the half, was big because it gave us a little bit of a cushion.” Tar Heels Open 2008 Season With Win Over Charlotte 49ers CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Third-ranked North Carolina rallied for four goals in the second half to break away from a halftime deadlock to defeat Charlotte 5-1 at Fetzer Field before a boisterous crowd of 3,274. It was the season opener for both women's soccer squads as UNC improved to 649-32-19 in the 700th game in Tar Heel history. Senior midfielder Allie Long led the Tar Heels with two goals and an assist while senior midfielder Yael Averbuch, sophomore forward Katie Klimczak and freshman forward Courtney Jones each scored once. It was the first time since 2005 that the Tar Heels have won their season opener. In 2006, Carolina lost its opener 1-0 in double overtime at Texas A&M, the Heels' first season-opening loss since a 1983 setback at Connecticut. A year ago, the Tar Heels lost their opener 1-0 to South Carolina, a loss that marked the first time in history UNC lost a home opener.
