The confidence of Virginia freshman Kyle Guy can be summed up in two words
– man bun. What started as an innocent pact with his hometown personal
trainer has turned into Guy’s calling card. Virginia fans celebrate it.
Opposing students sections love to hate it.
And that’s exactly why Guy keeps his headline-grabbing hairdo – he knows
the haters hate it, and he loves that.
I know what you’re thinking, and yes, the 6’3” guard from Indianapolis,
Indiana has the game to back up the hair. A four-year varsity player at
Lawrence Central High School, Guy averaged 23.5 points, 5.6 rebounds and
3.7 assists as a senior. He was named Mr. Basketball for Indiana and was
selected to the McDonald’s All-American game.
He was an offensive wizard at Lawrence Central. Flashy passes, a slick
handle and a lethal jumper made him one of the top scorers in his class. He
gets into the lane well and has no problem finishing at the rim.
But it’s that deadly jump shot that elevated him to an ESPN five-star
recruit and has made him an instant impact player for the Cavaliers. As
crazy as it sounds, his jumper has been even more effective at the college
level than it was in high school.
Guy shot an impressive 43% from three as a junior and senior in high
school. His 48.6% clip from behind the arc this season is the best in the
ACC (for players with 50+ attempts).
With such impressive shooting numbers, Guy’s 17.4 minutes per game average
seems unusually low, but it’s no secret that Tony Bennett places defense
well above offense. Guy’s defense isn’t quite where his offense is and that
just doesn’t equate to big minutes in Bennett’s system.
Taking some time to adjust to playing college defense is common amongst
freshmen, and Guy’s defense will come around in time. Putting on weight is
a top priority, as he’s listed at just 165 pounds.
Despite the sporadic playing time, Guy has shown enough promise for
Virginia fans to see him as their next superstar. Take a look at where Guy
is compared to the freshman seasons of three recent Virginia studs and you
can see why there is so much excitement surrounding him.
| Kyle Guy | London Perrantes | Justin Anderson | Malcolm Brogdon |
| Points per Game | 7.6 | 5.5 | 7.6 | 6.7 |
| Minutes per Game | 17.4 | 29.9 | 24.0 | 22.4 |
Leading scorer London Perrantes is gone after the season, meaning the
Cavaliers will be looking for a new go-to scorer. With some development on
the defensive end, Guy could start to see enough minutes to fill that go-to
void.
But there’s a solid chance we won’t have to wait until next season to see
Guy make national headlines for his play and not his hair. He’s somewhat of
a secret weapon for Virginia and could be what makes or breaks them as
serious ACC and national title contenders. We’ve seen time and time again
how big of an impact the three ball can have on postseason play, and if you
pair a hot-shooting Guy with Virginia’s NCAA-best scoring defense, the
Cavaliers are a legitimate Final Four threat.
