Record-Breaking Performances Abound at NCAA Swimming & Diving Championship

ACC athletes receive three national titles

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – The 2017 NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship saw record-breaking performances from Atlantic Coast Conference athletes. 

The women’s side saw four teams in the top-20, whereas the men saw two teams in the top-15. 

The Louisville women led the way amongst ACC schools in sixth place with 194.5 points—edging ACC Champion NC State which finished in seventh place with 194 points. Virginia (149) finished in 12th and North Carolina (73) came in 17th to round out the top-20. Following the Tar Heels were No. 28 Florida State (24), No. 31 Virginia Tech (18), No. 39 Miami (5), No. 41 Pitt (4), No. 44 Notre Dame (2) and No. 47 Duke (1).

Louisville’s Mallory Comerford highlighted the women’s competition as she made history, tying Olympic Gold medalist Katie Ledecky of Stanford for first place in the 200 freestyle. The sophomore touched in 1:40.36 to shatter the ACC record and earn All-America status. 

Comerford would then go on to break the 100 free conference record with a time of 46.35. Also recording new records were Virginia’s Leah Smith (500 free, 4:28.90) and Laura Simon (100 breast 58.20), NC State’s 200 free relay squad of Ky-lee Perry, Courtney Caldwell, Natalie Labonge and Krista Duffield (1:27.25) and the Wolfpack 400 free relay quartet of Alexia Zevnik, Perry, Lotta Nevalainen and Caldwell (3:10.31).

ACC women recorded 57 top-20 finishes while garnering 14 individual and eight relay All-America honors, along with 14 individual and eight relay honorable mention nods.

For the men, ACC Champion NC State landed in the top-five for the second consecutive year. The Wolfpack placed fourth with 272.5 points which ties its 2016 performance as the best finish in ACC history. Louisville finished in 11th with 143.5 points. No. 21 Miami (51), No. 22 Virginia Tech (48) and No. 25 Notre Dame (29) rounded out the top-25. Following the Fighting Irish were No. 31 Florida State (16), No. 32 Duke (12), No. 34 Pitt (8) and No. 26 North Carolina (6). 

On the first day of the men’s competition, the Wolfpack captured the NCAA title in the 800 free relay. The team of Ryan Held, Andreas Vazaios, Justin Ress and Soren Dahl touched in 6:06.53 for a new NCAA, Championship, American and conference record.  Held, as the lead-off, also broke the 200 free ACC record with his split of 1:31.37. 

Five new records were met or tied in addition to NC State’s title win. Louisville’s 400 medley relay team of Grigory Tarasevich, Carlos Claverie, Josh Quallen and Trevor Carroll rewrote their record with a time of 3:03.96. Tarasevich also recorded a new record in the 100 back when he touched in 45.22. Marcelo Acosta, also a Card, tied his own ACC record in the 1650 free when he placed third in 14:33.68. NC State’s Vazaios’s fifth-place finish in the 200 butterfly (1:40.80) marked a new record as well.

The last day of competition ended with a bang as Miami’s David Dinsmore claimed the 2017 NCAA title on platform with a score of 528.20. The freshman was also this year’s ACC champion in the event. 

Upon conclusion of the men’s competition, 13 ACC individuals and seven relays earned All-America honors and 10 individual and 5 relays earned honorable mention accolades.
