Sophomores voted final league Player and Pitcher of Week for 2017 season
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia sophomore Jake McCarthy has been named the final ACC Baseball Player of the Week for the 2017 season, while Florida State sophomore hurler Tyler Holton earned Pitcher of the Week accolades.
ACC weekly honors are determined by a vote of a select media panel. This is the fifth Pitcher of the Week honor this season for Holton, tying the single-season league record held by NC State’s Mike Rogers (2004). It is the first career award for McCarthy.
McCarthy had a tremendous week for the Cavaliers, recording four straight multiple-hit games as Virginia went 3-1, including a series win over Georgia Tech. He recorded his first career two-home run game Thursday and followed it up Friday with his first career four-hit game. Six of the Scranton, Pennsylvania, outfielder’s 12 hits went for extra bases.
Holton won his third consecutive start, allowing one run on five hits at No. 2 Louisville in Florida State’s 8-2 win on Friday. The win secured the series win for the Seminoles, the first for a visiting ACC team at Louisville since the Cardinals joined the league in 2015. Holton walked three batters, including the first hitter of the game, before retiring the next 10. He recorded 11 strikeouts, making him the first Seminole to record double-digit strikeouts four times in a year since Sean Gilmartin in 2011. With the win, the Tallahassee native improved to 8-2 on the season and dropped his ERA to 2.55 heading into this week’s ACC Baseball Championship.
