#3 IRISH WIN SHAMROCK SERIES TILT WITH ORANGE

BRONX, N.Y. (cuse.com) – #3/3 Notre Dame (10-0) took advantage of three first-half turnovers by #12/12 Syracuse (8-3) and claimed a 36-3 decision in the Shamrock Series game played at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.

A sellout crowd of 48,104 saw the Orange and the Fighting Irish tangle at Yankee Stadium for the first time since 1963.

Syracuse's four-game winning streak was ended with the defeat.

HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Notre Dame's first points, a nine-yard touchdown pass from Ian Book to Dexter Williams in the first quarter, proved to be the winning points with Syracuse held to a field goal in the contest.

TURNOVERS TELL THE STORY
Syracuse was victimized by three first-half turnovers – each a Notre Dame interception. The three first-half thefts led to 10 Notre Dame points.

Strong safety Jalen Elliott intercepted Syracuse signal caller Eric Dungey in the first quarter and returned it 24 yards. The Syracuse defense halted the Notre Dame advance and the Irish settled for a 26-yard field goal by Justin Yoon.

On the first play of the second quarter, Syracuse's Tommy DeVito, a redshirt freshman, was picked off by Alohi Gilman at the Notre Dame 16. The Irish ended up punting to end their offensive series.

The Orange were not as fortunate later in the second quarter. DeVito's pass to freshman Taj Harris was knocked loose and intercepted by Gilman and returned 54 yards to the Syracuse nine. Notre Dame scored on the next play, a nine-yard run by Jafar Armstrong, to extend its advantage to 20-0.

On the other side, Notre Dame had just one turnover, the end-zone interception by Syracue freshman Andre Cisco in the second quarter.

DUNGEY DEPARTS
Dungey, Syracuse's record-setting quarterback, was forced to leave the game with an injury midway through Syracuse's third possession of the contest. After his four-yard gain advanced the ball to the Notre Dame 42-yard line, Dungey departed the contest.

SYRACUSE'S BEST CHANCE PART ONE
The Orange had its best scoring change in the fourth quarter. Syracuse moved 68 yards in 18 plays, advancing as far as the Notre Dame five-yard line. On fourth-and-four from the five, redshirt freshman Andre Szmyt saw his 23-yard field-goal attempt hit the upright and fail.

SYRACUSE'S BEST CHANCE PART TWO
On Syracuse's final possession, the Orange maneuvered to the Irish 10-yard line. This time Szmyt converted a 28-yard three-pointer to avert the shutout with 10 seconds left. The final drive covered 55 yards in 11 plays.

Szmyt's 3-pointer set an ACC record for season field goals (28). Szmyt already owned the Syracuse single-season mark.

NUMBERS FAVOR NOTRE DAME
The Irish outgained Syracuse, 463-234, and accumulated 23 first downs to Syracuse's 16. Book completed 23-of-37 passes for 292 yards and two touchdowns. Williams ran 13 times for 74 yards and a score and also caught a nine-yard touchdown pass.

Te'von Coney had 12 tackles to pace the Notre Dame defensive effort. Gilman, who had two interceptions, added eight total stops.
