In partnership with the College Football Playoff Foundation’s Extra Yard for Teachers initiative, the Atlantic Coast Conference has provided more than $155,000 to fully fund 367 classroom projects in Charlotte and the two participating team’s communities of Clemson and Charlottesville as part of the 2019 ACC Football Championship Game. In total, more than 43,000 students and nearly 300 teachers at 100 schools received financial support. Contributions were made through DonorsChoose.org, a crowdfunding charity that allows teachers to request school supplies for their classrooms.
Other initiatives surrounding the ACC Football Championship Game week in Charlotte included a mascot pep rally as part of the conference’s partnership with United Way of Central Carolinas at River Gate Elementary. Students from two additional participating schools in the ACC United Way Reading Challenge also attended, and the principal of each school received a DonorsChoose.org gift card.
This year’s ACC Football Championship game festivities also included the introduction of Extra Yard for Teachers’ new mascot, Ace, and an activation at FanFest, which invited fans to participate in an activity that gives back to local schools.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Teacher of the Year finalists will attend today’s ACC Football Championship Game, where they will be recognized on-field and receive DonorsChoose.org gift cards for their respective classroom projects.
Since 2016, the ACC in conjunction with the College Football Playoff Foundation has funded more than 1,100 classroom projects impacting more than 116,000 students at nearly 450 schools.
Founded in 2000 by a Bronx history teacher, DonorsChoose.org has raised more than $900 million for America's classrooms. Teachers come to DonorsChoose.org to request the materials and experiences they need most for their classrooms, and donors give to the projects that inspire them.
