Friday Prelim Heat Sheet
After an exciting Thursday night, NC State claimed the meet lead at 2018 ACC Women’s Swimming & Diving Championship, held at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
NC State sits in first place with 454 points, followed by Louisville (409), Virginia (379), and Notre Dame (320.5).
In Thursday night’s individual events, Louisville’s Mallory Comerford won the 500 free for the second year in a row in 4:36.63. NC State’s Julia Poole won the 200 IM in 1:55.13, and Virginia’s Morgan Hill defended her title in the 50 free with a time of 21.68.
In diving action, Miami’s Briadam Herrera won his second title of the week by taking home the top spot in the 3-meter.
The 2019 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships resume Friday morning at 10 a.m. with preliminaries for the 100 butterfly, 400 IM, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and women’s platform diving. The finals for those events, in addition to the 400 medley relay, will get underway at 6 p.m.
Women’s 500 Free:
The Louisville Cardinals opened Thursday night’s swimming in loud fashion as senior Mallory Comerford defended her title in the 500 free final.
Comerford took off almost eight seconds from her preliminary time and posted an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 4:34.63 to win the ACC title.
Virginia’s Madden finished in second in 4:38.13, just ahead of NC State’s Kathleen Moore (4:39.10)
Women’s 200 IM finals:
NC State’s Julia Poole, who qualified for the championship final with the fourth-fastest time this morning in 1:56.00, dropped almost a second from her time to win the ACC title in the 200 IM with a time of 1:55.13.
Poole who placed third last year at the ACC championship in the 200 IM, out-touched Louisville’s Abigail Richter (1:55.92) and Louisville’s Grace Oglesby (1:56.33).
Women 50 Free Finals:
Virginia’s Morgan Hill defended her title and won the 50 free with a time of 21.68, finishing .01 seconds ahead of NC State’s Ky-lee Perry.
It was a tight race from start to finish as all eight swimmers finished within one second. NC State’s Kylee Alon’s finished just behind Hill and Perry with a time of 21.81.
Men 3-meter diving finals:
Miami’s Briadam Herrera won his sixth ACC gold medal by winning the 3-meter competition on Thursday night with a score of 452.55
Duke’s Evan Moretti claimed second with 403.55 and Florida State’s Joshua Davidson was third with 387.55.
Women’s 200 Free relay:
NC State closed out the night in record-setting fashion.
The Pack squad of Ky-lee Perry, Kylee Alons, Sirena Rowe and Sophie Hansson combined to touch in 1:26.15 to break the ACC record of 1:26.67.
Louisville came in second with a score of 1:27.47 and Virginia followed in third with a score of 1:28.60.
