GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Senior attacker Sam Apuzzo, who led Boston College to an unbeaten regular season and a No. 1 national ranking, heads up the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Lacrosse Team announced on Tuesday.
Apuzzo, the lone unanimous selection in voting by the league’s head coaches, leads the ACC in scoring (5.65 points per game) and total goals scored (71), ranks second in goals per game (4.18) and is among the league’s top five in assists, game-winning goals and shots per game.
Boston College and North Carolina combined to place 13 total players on the first and second teams. The Eagles, who will host this week’s ACC Women’s Lacrosse Championship as the number one seed, led all schools with seven total players selected and matched Notre Dame for most first-team selections with four. The Tar Heels, who will enter the Championship as three-time defending champions, followed with six total selections – three on the 16-member first team and three on the second team.
Syracuse equaled the Fighting Irish with five total selections, followed by Virginia and Virginia Tech with three each. Two players were selected from Duke and one from Louisville, as each of the ACC’s eight women’s lacrosse programs placed at least one student-athlete on the first or second team.
Apuzzo is joined on the first team by teammate Kenzie Kent, who leads the conference in assists per game (3.41) and ranks third in scoring (5.53). Midfielder Dempsey Arsenault and defender Elizabeth Miller round out the Eagles’ first-team contingent.
North Carolina’s Taylor Moreno, whose .552 save percentage is tops among conference goalkeepers, is joined on the All-ACC first team by teammates Jamie Ortega (5.2 points, 3.87 goals per game) and defensive standout Emma Trenchard.
Attacker Maddie Howe, midfielder Andie Aldave, defender Hannah Proctor and goalkeeper Samantha Giacolone make up Notre Dame’s balanced All-ACC quartet. They are joined on the first team by Virginia midfielders Sammy Mueller and Maggie Jackson, Duke attacker Olivia Jenner, Syracuse attacker Emily Hawryschuk (the ACC leader in game-winning goals with six) and Virginia Tech midfielder Paige Petty.
The 2019 All-ACC Women’s Lacrosse team features 13 repeat selections from last season, including seven repeat first-teamers in Boston College’s Apuzzo, Arsenault and Miller, Syracuse’s Hawryschuk, Virginia’s Mueller, Virginia Tech’s Petty and Notre Dame’s Giacolone.
Boston College (17-0, 7-0 ACC) will play No. 8 seed Louisville (5-12, 0-7) in the first game of the ACC Championship on Wednesday at 11 a.m. The game will be a rematch of Saturday’s regular-season finale, which saw Boston College post a 19-6 win over the visiting Cardinals.
Other quarterfinal matchups include No. 2 seed North Carolina (12-3, 5-2) playing No. 7 seed Virginia Tech (8-9, 1-6). No. 3 Notre Dame (13-3, 5-2) goes against No. 6 Duke (9-7, 2-5), and No. 4 Syracuse (14-3, 5-2) will face No. 5 Virginia (12-5, 3-4).
Syracuse and Virginia will meet at 2 p.m. on Wednesday following the conclusion of the Boston College-Louisville game. The North Carolina-Virginia Tech contest is slated for 5 p.m., while Notre Dame and Duke will close out quarterfinal action at 8 p.m.
The four winners will meet in the semifinals on Friday at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., and the ACC Championship title game is set for Sunday at 1 p.m.
All seven games of the tournament will be televised on the ACC’s Regional Sports Networks (RSN) and will also be available on ACC Network Extra. Tom Werme will be handling play-by-play with color commentary from Leah Secando.
Boston College also holds the No. 1 spot in the Inside Lacrosse Coaches poll, followed by No. 3 North Carolina, No. 4 Syracuse, No. 6 Notre Dame, No. 7 Virginia and No. 18 Duke.
