The top-seeded Virginia Cavaliers scored seven unanswered goals en route to a dominant 10-4 victory against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to win the 2019 Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Lacrosse Championship Saturday afternoon at Klockner Stadium.

After the score was knotted at 2-2 following the first period, Virginia scored three goals in the second and four goals in the third to pull away and earn its 18th conference title, seventh tournament championship.

“This is the way the ACC Championship game should be, on a campus [of one of the participating teams in the final],” said UVA head coach Lars Tiffany. “I mean what a setting here, the Charlottesville faithful, the community, Notre Dame fans, our fans. If you saw us two years ago with my first season here as a head coach, also as a defensive coordinator, I like to wear both hats, we've come a long way. I give credit to these group of men for continuing to believe in me after that first year.

“That all really culminated today with our decision making, when to slide to the man being dodged, and when not to. Because we don't slide to everything, that decision making has taken years to hone. The culmination of it was what we did today against a really tough offensive team.”

Virginia junior midfielder Ryan Conrad was named the ACC Championship MVP, scoring two goals with three ground balls and a caused turnover in the championship game. Teammates Dox Aitken, Jared Conners and Matt Moore were also named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Cavaliers grabbed a 2-0 lead in the game before the Fighting Irish knotted the tally later in the first period. A goal from Ian Laviano just 45 seconds into the second period sparked a stretch of seven consecutive goals for the Cavs, as Aitken and Conrad each added a pair during the run.

Virginia was especially dominant in the third period, as they won all five faceoffs and held an 11-2 advantage on ground balls.

Each of Notre Dame’s goals were scored by a different player, including one from 2018 ACC Championship MVP and all-tournament team selection Bryan Costabile.

Virginia improves to 13-3 on the year and Notre Dame moves to 8-6 overall.

The 2019 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship selection show is set for Sunday, May 5 at 9 p.m. on ESPNU.
