Maryland Defeats Syracuse, 63-20

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (cuse.com) – Maryland (2-0) scored touchdowns on seven of its first eight possessions and went on to defeat #21 Syracuse (1-1), 63-20.

Syracuse redshirt sophomore Tommy DeVito passed for a career-high 330 yards in the defeat.

The Terrapins, who scored 79 points in their opener against Howard, continued to produce offensive pyrotechnics in game two. It represented the first time in program history Maryland topped 63 points in consecutive games.

THE TERRAPIN BEATS THE ORANGE
Maryland's "Fear The Turtle" hype phrase was not comparable with the stereotypical slow-and-steady tortoise winning the race against the hare. The Terps' offense operated in a high-speed mode similar to what Syracuse has employed in recent years.

The hosts produced 50 offensive plays and 397 yards in the first half alone. Maryland converted eight-of-nine third-down conversion attempts and all six red-zone opportunities in the first two quarters.

The Terps finished with 650 total yards, the seventh-highest total yielded by Syracuse in program history.

JACKSON'S ACTIONS
Terrapin quarterback Josh Jackson completed 21-of-38 passes for 296 yards and three touchdowns. He took advantage of the many weapons at his disposal with eight Maryland players catching at least two passes.

A RARE SZMYT MISCUE
Sophomore kicker Andre Szmyt converted his first point-after-touchdown kick but misfired on his second attempt. It broke his streak of 65 consecutive extra points that covered the span of his collegiate career.

Szmyt embarked on a new streak when he made his next extra-point boot.

DEVITO THROWS A RALLY AT MARYLAND
DeVito tried to keep the Orange in the game through the air. He tossed touchdown passes of nine and 15 yards to redshirt junior Trishton Jackson and senior Sean Riley, respectively, in the first half. He teamed with Jackson again in the third quarter on a 52-yard scoring toss. After DeVito threw a strike to Jackson, the wideout spun away from a would-be tackler and sprinted to paydirt.

DeVito finished the contest 28-of-39 for 330 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. He set career-high totals in completions, attempts and yards. His three touchdown passes equaled his career-best effort.

NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • Maryland had four different backs rush for at least 67 yards and score a touchdown.
  • The Terps finished with 354 yards and six touchdowns from the ground game.
  • Syracuse extended its streak of consecutive games with a takeaway to 16 when sophomore Andre Cisco intercepted a pass in the third quarter. The Orange entered the game with the fourth longest active streak in the Division I ranks.
  • Cisco's theft was the ninth of his career in just 15 games played.
  • Cisco also led the Syracuse defensive unit with nine total tackles.
  • Jackson finished with a career-high seven catches, 157 yards and two touchdown receptions.
AYE AYE, CAPTAIN!
Syracuse captains for the Maryland game were redshirt senior defensive lineman Shaq Grosvenor, senior wide receiver Sean Riley, and senior special-teams performer Otto Zaccardo. Coach Dino Babers selects team captains each week.
