Alvarado, Champagnie Pick Up ACC Men’s Basketball Weekly Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Georgia Tech junior guard Jose Alvarado has earned Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honors, while Pitt guard/forward Justin Champagnie claimed ACC Freshman of the Week honors.

ACC men’s basketball weekly honors are determined by a vote of a 15-member media panel and announced on Mondays throughout the regular season.

Alvarado averaged 19.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and 5.0 steals per game last week as Georgia Tech fell at No. 6 Louisville, 68-64, on Wednesday before downing NC State, 64-58, Saturday. He posted his first career double-double against Louisville and then set a school record for steals in a game on Saturday. His performance Wednesday kept the Yellow Jackets in the game until the final seconds. The native of Brooklyn, New York, had 13 points and 10 rebounds and played stout defense against the ACC’s leading scorer, Jordan Nwora, who went 3-for-11 from the floor for 10 points. He led the Yellow Jackets to a season sweep of NC State Saturday, scoring a season-high 26 points with eight rebounds, and he broke a 28-year-old Tech record with nine steals, the last two of which thwarted the Wolfpack’s final two offensive possessions in the game. For the week, he went 13-for-31 from the floor, hit a pair of threes in each game and went 9-for-12 from the foul line.

Champagnie averaged 15.5 ppg and 9.5 rpg as Pitt downed Boston College, 74-72, at home on Wednesday before falling at Syracuse, 69-61, Saturday. In those games, he shot 65.0% (13-of-20). The Brooklyn. New York, native recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds in the win over Boston College. He went 8-of-14 from the field and had a game-clinching steal in the final seconds to help the Panthers overcome a 14-point first-half deficit. Champagnie followed that with 14 points and nine rebounds at Syracuse despite missing a majority of the opening half after picking up two fouls in the opening 2:07 of play. He went 5-of-6 from the field and 4-of-6 from the foul line in the game. Champagnie scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds in the second half as the Panthers cut a double-digit Syracuse halftime lead to a one-possession game three times in the final 2:30 of action.
