GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia Tech redshirt junior forward Keve Aluma was named the first ACC Player of the Week for the 2020-21 men’s basketball season on Monday, while Duke forward Jalen Johnson claimed ACC Freshman of the Week honors.
ACC men’s basketball weekly honors are determined by a vote of a 15-member media panel and announced on Mondays throughout the regular season.
Aluma averaged 18.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg and 1.3 bpg as the Hokies started their season with three wins last week, defeating Radford (77-62) at home and topping No. 3 Villanova (81-73 OT) and USF (76-58) at the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off in Uncasville, Connecticut. For the week he was 15-of-25 (60%) from the floor and 8-of-15 (53.3%) from 3-point range. He scored a career-high 19 points Wednesday in his debut as a Hokie, then followed it up with another career high with 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting against third-ranked Villanova Saturday. He also pulled down eight rebounds and had two blocks against the Wildcats and held preseason All-BIG EAST first-team selection Jeremiah Robinson-Earl to 5-of-15 shooting (33%) and a season-low 14 points.
Johnson opened his Duke career Saturday with a 19-point, 19-rebound performance that also included five assists and four blocked shots as the Blue Devils topped Coppin State, 81-71. He was 8-of-8 from the field (1-of-1 from 3-point range) and 2-of-2 from the free throw line to set a Duke freshman record for most points in a game with 100% shooting. His 19 rebounds were the third most by a Duke freshman in a game, and his 15 defensive rebounds set a Duke freshman single-game mark. He was just third Duke freshman to post a double-double in a debut game, joining Jason Williams (1999) and Marvin Bagley III (2017). Johnson joins Wisconsin’s Ethan Happ as the only power conference players in the last decade with a performance of 15+ points, 15+ rebounds, 5+ assists and 4+ blocked shots.
