Pitt’s Champagnie, FSU’s Barnes Earn ACC Men’s Basketball Weekly Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Pitt sophomore forward Justin Champagnie was named the ACC Player of the Week on Monday, while Florida State guard Scottie Barnes earned ACC Freshman of the Week honors.

ACC men’s basketball weekly honors are determined by a vote of a 15-member media panel and announced on Mondays throughout the regular season.

Champagnie delivered one of the most impressive two-game stretches in recent ACC history, averaging 22.0 ppg, 20.5 rpg and 2.5 apg in wins over Northwestern and Gardner-Webb. He became the first NCAA Division I player since Caleb Swanigan of Purdue (2016-17) to post consecutive 20-point, 20-rebound games. Champagnie joined Swanigan and Oklahoma’s Blake Griffin (2008-09) as the only players in the last 25 years to record back-to-back 20-20 games. He is the first ACC player since Wake Forest’s Tim Duncan (1996-97) to record two 20-20 games in a season.

A native of Brooklyn, New York, Champagnie scored 20 points and grabbed 20 rebounds Wednesday at Northwestern, and his 20-point effort included a game-clinching dunk with 5.8 seconds remaining to give Pitt its first lead of the game and help the Panthers overcome an 11-point halftime deficit. Champagnie topped that performance with 24 points and 21 rebounds Saturday against Gardner-Webb. He is the first Pitt player since DeJuan Blair (2008-09) to record two 20-20 games in a season and the first to record a 20-20 game since Blair during the 2008-09 season.

A native of West Palm Beach, Florida, Barnes averaged 13.0 ppg, 5.0 apg and 3.0 rpg and shot 50% (10 of 20) from the field in wins over Indiana and Florida last week. He scored the game-winning basket in the Seminoles’ 69-67 overtime win over Indiana in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge Wednesday. Barnes totaled nine points, five assists, four rebounds, and four steals against Indiana; five of his nine points came in overtime. He then scored a team-high tying 17 points as he led FSU past Florida for the Seminoles’ seventh consecutive victory over their cross-state rivals. Barnes added five assists, two rebounds and one steal against the Gators.
