GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – NC State senior forward Kayla Jones has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, and Notre Dame forward Maddy Westbeld is the ACC Freshman of the Week.
ACC women’s basketball weekly awards are voted on by the league’s Blue Ribbon Panel.
Jones recorded her first career double-double in NC State’s 54-46 win at top-ranked South Carolina last Thursday, as she scored a game-high 16 points to go along with 12 rebounds. She was a perfect 2-for-2 from the 3-point line, including a crucial 3-pointer with 27 seconds remaining to give the Wolfpack a five-point lead.
It marked the second consecutive year that an ACC team has defeated the nation’s No. 1 team, as Louisville downed Oregon last year. Additionally, it was NC State’s first win against the nation’s top-ranked team since 2007 and just the third in program history.
On Sunday, the Jamesville, North Carolina, native scored 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor in just 17 minutes of action with eight rebounds and three assists, as NC State routed Coastal Carolina, 98-46. For the week, Jones shot 50% from the floor (11-of-22) and grabbed 20 rebounds, including five offensive boards.
Westbeld led the Fighting Irish in scoring in both games last week, as Notre Dame fell to No. 24 Michigan, 76-66, before bouncing back with a 65-58 win against IUPUI on Sunday. She recorded 18 points on 7-of-15 shooting against the Wolverines, while logging seven rebounds and three assists.
Hailing from Kettering, Ohio, Westbeld scored a career-high 22 points versus IUPUI with 12 of her points coming in the fourth quarter to lift the Irish to the victory. She shot better than 50% for the week, connecting on 16 of her 29 shots to go along with 13 rebounds and seven assists.
Westbeld is one of just two freshmen nationally averaging 15.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game and the only from a Power 5 conference.
ACC women’s basketball action returns Wednesday, as conference play tips off with Boston College visiting Georgia Tech for an 11 a.m. start on ACC Network Extra. Second-ranked Louisville travels to Duke for a 7 p.m. tip on RSN, and NC State hosts Elon in a non-conference matchup on ACC Network at 7:15 p.m.
