Thornton, Clemson Beat Miami 71-56 at ACC Tourney

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) - Kobi Thornton scored a career-high 27points on 12-of-16 shooting and Clemson used a 16-4 run to pull away for good and beat Miami 71-56 on Wednesday at the ACC tournament.

Amari Robinson added 14 points for No. 14 seed Clemson (8-22), which snapped an 11-game skid. The Tigers play sixth-seeded Boston College in the second round Thursday.

Thornton scored seven points during the decisive run that gave Clemson a 55-44 lead when Robinson made a short jumper at the end of the third quarter. Miami (15-15) trailed by double figures the rest of the way.

Beatrice Mompremier led the No. 11 seed Hurricanes with 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting. The rest of the team shot 22% (11 of 49) from the field.

OF NOTE:

  • Clemson won its ACC Women’s Tournament opener for the second consecutive season … The Tigers ae now 32-40 all-time in the event, including a 4-10 mark in first-round games.
  • Miami slipped to 9-16 all-time in ACC Tournament play and to 13-8 in all-time games versus Clemson … Wednesday night marked the first time the schools had met in the ACC Tournament.
  • The Tigers turned the tables on the Hurricanes in the ACC Tournament after dropping both regular-season meetings between the teams (68-64 at Miami on Jan. 23 and 63-48 at Clemson on Feb. 16)  … Virginia Tech in 2013 remains the only ACC team Miami has beaten three times in one season since joining the conference for the 2004-05 season)
  • With her career high 27 points on 12-of16 shooting from the floor, senior Kobi Thornton led Clemson in scoring for the 11th time this season … Thornton also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, marking her 12th time leading the Tigers in that category in 2019-20.
  • Thornton is only the second player in program history to reach at least 1,400 points, 700 rebounds and 100 blocks for a career.
  • Miami standout senior Beatrice Mompremier, who missed 14 games due to injury this season, led the Hurricanes with 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the floor … In her four games after returning late in the season, Mompremier has averaged 19 points and 6.3 rebounds per game.
