GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia senior forward Mamadi Diakite was named the final ACC Player of the Week for the 2019-20 season on Monday, while Duke center Vernon Carey Jr. earned Freshman of the Week honors.
This marks the second time this season Diakite earned ACC Player of the Week honors (Feb. 17), while Carey collects Freshman of the Week for the fifth time (Nov. 25, Dec. 9 & 23, Feb. 3).
ACC men’s basketball weekly honors are determined by a vote of a 15-member media panel and announced on Mondays throughout the regular season.
Diakite averaged 15.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and 1.5 blocks as No. 22 Virginia went 2-0 to earn the No. 2 seed in the ACC Tournament. The Second Team All-ACC Selection, which was announced on Monday morning, tallied his third career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds in UVA’s 46-44 win over Miami last Wednesday.
The Conakry, Guinea, native added 17 points, eight rebounds and two blocks as the Cavaliers knocked off No. 10 Louisville 57-54 Saturday on Senior Day. He shot 13-of-27 from the field (48.2 percent) and 5-of-7 from the free throw line (71.4 percent) in the victories.
Diakite ranks 13th in the ACC in scoring (team-leading 13.7 points), 15th in rebounding (6.8) and eighth in blocked shots (1.3).
Carey carried the Blue Devils to a pair of rivalry wins on the last week of the regular season, averaging 21.0 points and 8.5 rebounds in victories over NC State, 88-69, on Monday and North Carolina, 89-76, on Saturday. The ACC Rookie of the Year scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds with two blocked shots in win against the Wolfpack.
He followed that performance with 25 points and 10 rebounds to record his 15th double-double in the win over the Tar Heels. Of his 15 double-doubles, 14 have been 15-10 games, while 10 have been 20-10 efforts. For the week, Carey was 12-of-20 from the field (.600) and knocked down 18-of-22 (.818) at the free throw line. The freshman continues to lead the ACC in field goal percentage, is third in scoring, fourth in rebounds and sixth in blocked shots – the league’s only player ranked in the top 10 in all four categories.
