GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Trey Cunningham of Florida State and Debbie Ajagbe of Miami have been recognized as the 2019-20 Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athletes of the Year and lead the sport’s All-ACC Academic Teams announced on Friday.
A season-long member of The Bowerman men’s watch list and a multi-ACC record-holder in the 60-meter hurdles, Cunningham is a two-time selection to the FSU Dean’s List and a member of the ACC Honor Roll. The junior public relations major from Winfield, Alabama, posted a 3.667 grade point average for the most recent fall semester and a 3.6 GPA in spring of 2019.
Voted the ACC Indoor Track and Field Track Performer for of the Year by the league’s head coaches and a finalist for USTFCCCA Male Track Athlete of the Year, Cunningham finished the season top-ranked nationally and unbeaten against collegiate competition in the 60-meter hurdles this season.
Named the USTFCCCA South Region Men’s Track Athlete of the Year after he became the first man to win three consecutive ACC hurdle titles, Cunningham broke his own conference championship record when he ran 7.60 in the final at Notre Dame on Feb. 29, helping the Seminoles to their third consecutive and 13th all-time team title. His lifetime-best time of 7.51 during the regular season tied for the seventh-fastest in collegiate history and is both an ACC and Florida State record.
Miami’s Ajagbe sports a 3.52 career GPA while majoring in mechanical engineering. The Hurricanes’ junior thrower is a three-time member of the dean’s list and has earned selection to the Miami AD honor roll five times. She earned a spot on the ACC Honor Roll each of her first two seasons of eligibility and was named to both the Mortar Board Honor Society and the Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society this year.
Ajagbe, who earned both ACC Women’s Field Performer of the Year and ACC Championship Field MVP honors this past season, claimed conference championships in both the weight throw and shot put. The Miami native took the gold medal in the weight throw with a mark of 22.55 meters that set both an ACC Championships and Miami record. She followed with a winning shot put throw of 16.80 meters that ranked as a personal best and third in Miami school history.
Miami became the first school to sweep ACC Women’s Field Performer of the Year, Women’s Championship Field MVP and Women’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards in back-to-back indoor seasons. Former Hurricanes pentathlon standout Michelle Atherley claimed all three honors last season.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September of 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their careers, as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team. A combined 89 men and women named to the All-ACC Academic Indoor Track and Field Academic Teams also earned first- or second-team All-ACC honors at this year’s Championship and/or were ACC Performers of the Week during the regular season.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
