GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) - Duke junior forward Marykate McGuire has been named the first Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for the 2020 season, while Pitt junior defender Kate McKay has been tabbed ACC Defensive Player of the Week.
McGuire helped lead the Blue Devils to a 4-3 overtime victory at Wake Forest in a non-conference matchup last Thursday with her second career multi-goal outing. She scored her first goal with less than three minutes remaining in regulation to knot the score at 3-3 and force overtime.
In overtime, the Portsmouth, Rhode Island, native scored the golden goal at the 95:08 mark to lift Duke to the win. McGuire logged an assist on the Blue Devils’ second goal of the match and finished the night with five points, two goals and an assist. She also attempted a school-record 10 shots in the contest.
McKay’s strong play in the middle of the back line allowed Pitt to open the season with a pair of victories at Appalachian State. In the Panthers’ season-opening win last Thursday, she helped the squad post a shutout in the 4-0 victory and limit the Mountaineers to just one shot on goal.
Hailing from Scottsdale, Arizona, she recorded an assist on Pitt’s first goal of the year, as she placed a free kick into the box where it was headed in for a goal. McKay also tallied an assist on the Panthers’ last goal of the contest in her first multi-assist game of her career.
She scored her first goal as a Panther in Sunday’s match off a broken play from a corner kick to finish the opening weekend with a pair of assists, a goal and four points.
ACC women’s soccer action returns Thursday night, Sept. 17, with six conference matches. Duke will host Virginia at 6 p.m. and Notre Dame travels to Florida State for an 8 p.m. tilt in a pair of matches that will air live on ACC Network.
