GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – A pair of redshirt freshmen – NC State’s Hunter Lewis and Virginia Tech’s Sam Latona – have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Co-Wrestlers of the Week for Jan. 12.
Wrestling at 149 pounds against a pair of Appalachian State wrestlers, Lewis scored a first-period pin just 1:29 into his match versus 10th-ranked Jonathan Millner. It was the second win of the day, as he also pinned Francis Morrissey in a time of just 1:42 to win both of his matches in the round robin against the Mountaineers a day after the dual between the two schools.
Lewis is now 3-0 on the season, with all three wins coming via pins. The Stoughton, Wisconsin, native red-shirted last season and was unable to compete in open tournaments due to a knee injury.
The 125-pound Latona was the only Hokie wrestler to post a 3-0 individual mark on Sunday as eighth-ranked Virginia Tech defeated Ohio (39-6), Kent State (42-9) and host West Virginia (24-10) in quad meet action push its team record for the season to 4-0.
After winning by forfeit against Ohio, Latona posted a 10-2 major decision over Kent State’s Jake Ferri. The Alabaster, Alabama, native then edged West Virginia’s 12th-ranked Killian Cardinale, 3-2. No. 18-ranked Latona’s win over Cardinale came in the quad’s only matchup of nationally-ranked wrestlers.
