GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – The following student-athletes have been selected as the first Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Track and Field Performers of the Week of the 2021 season. This week’s list features USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week Terryon Conwell of Clemson and four more student-athletes who posted national top-five times or makes in their respective events.
Men’s Track Performer of the Week
Terryon Conwell, Clemson, Sr.; Decatur, Ga.
In his debut meet with the Tigers, Conwell clocked the 10th-fastest men’s 300 meters time in collegiate indoor history with his first-place finish of 32.97 at the Orange & Purple Elite on Saturday. The Mississippi State transfer became the first Clemson runner to break 33 seconds in the event, besting the previous school mark of 33.20 (Marcus Parker, 2019). Conwell also topped his previous PR of 34.11, which he set while running for Mississippi State during the 2020 season opener.
Men’s Co-Field Performer of the Week
Ezra Mellinger, Duke, So.; Ronks, Pa.
Competing at the Orange and Purple Elite hosted by Clemson, Mellinger posted a first-place distance of 7.27m (23-10.25) in the long jump that currently stands as the fifth-best in the nation. Mellinger’s PR mark currently ranks first in the ACC and is fourth all-time at Duke. Mellinger also made his mark in two track events, winning the 60m dash with a time of 6.97 seconds, and the 200 meters with a top time of 21.89 seconds.
Men’s Co-Field Performer of the Week
John Watkins, Georgia Tech, Fr.; Hoover, Ala.
Watkins made a definite impact in his first collegiate meet, registering a first-place triple jump of 14.32m (46-11.75) at the Orange and Purple Elite that ranks fourth nationally. Watkins also competed in the long jump and posted a mark of 6.51m that currently ranks among the nation’s top 30.
Women’s Track Performer of the Week
Trishauna Hemmings, Clemson, Sr.; Kingston, Jamaica
Hemmings posted a personal best of 8.29 in the prelims of the 60-meter hurdles at the Orange and Purple Elite to rank second nationally and established a personal best that ranks 11th in Clemson school history. She added a run of 38.95 in the 300 meters that currently ranks as the nation’s top posted collegiate time and placed second in Saturday’s meet behind Duke’s Brittany Aveni, who clocked in at 38.47 running unattached.
Women’s Field Performer of the Week
Attallah Smith, Georgia Tech, Jr., Lithonia, Ga.
Smith led the women’s long jump field at the Orange and Purple Elite and currently ranks second nationally following her mark of 5.95 meters (19-6.25). The first-place finish was a career first for the Yellow Jacket junior.
