GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) - Louisville senior guard Dana Evans has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, and Syracuse center Kamilla Cardoso is the ACC Freshman of the Week.
ACC women’s basketball weekly awards are voted on by the league’s Blue Ribbon Panel.
Evans averaged 23.0 points per game and shot 40.5% from the floor to lift top-ranked Louisville to a 67-54 win against No. 23 Syracuse on Thursday and a 65-63 victory at Wake Forest on Sunday, as the Cardinals remained one of just six unbeaten teams nationally. She opened the week with a game-high 21 points and seven assists against the Orange to help Louisville to its second top-25 win this season.
On Sunday, the Gary, Indiana, native willed her team to the victory as she scored 10 of her 25 points in the fourth quarter. With the Cardinals trailing late, Evans took over and made the game-winning old-fashioned 3-point play with eight seconds remaining to lead Louisville to the two-point win.
The Preseason ACC Player of the Year leads the ACC in scoring with 19.9 points per game and has tallied 20 or more points in 10 games this season, which also paces the conference.
Cardoso averaged a double-double over a three-game stretch for Syracuse last week, netting 11.7 points and 11.0 rebounds per game. The freshman standout logged a career-best 16 rebounds to go along with 10 points and four blocks in an 88-76 win against North Carolina on Tuesday. She followed that performance with 13 points and 11 rebounds, as the Orange fell on the road to Louisville.
Hailing from Montes Claros, Brazil, Cardoso had 12 points, six rebounds and six blocks in an 86-77 overtime loss at Clemson on Sunday. She helped the Orange erase a 25-point deficit and force overtime, but the Tigers earned the victory.
It marks the second consecutive week that a Syracuse player has earned ACC Freshman of the Week, as Priscilla Williams claimed the honor last week.
ACC women’s basketball action returns Tuesday afternoon, as Louisville hosts Miami at 4 p.m. on ACC Network and Pitt travels to Clemson for a 7 p.m. tipoff on ACC Network Extra.
