GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Georgia Tech outside hitter Julia Bergmann and Syracuse middle blocker Marina Markova have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Volleyball Co-Players of the Week, while Miami outside hitter Peyman Yardimici has been selected as the Freshman of the Week.
Bergmann was the focal point of the Georgia Tech attack in wins over North Carolina (3-0) and NC State (3-1). The junior from Munich, Germany, posted a double-double in each match, totaling 38 kills, 22 digs, five blocks, three aces and posting a .460 hitting percentage on the weekend. In the sweep of North Carolina, Bergmann posted 17 kills, 12 digs, two blocks and an ace with a hitting percentage of .536. Against NC State, the junior Yellow Jacket hit at a .400 clip with 21 kills, 10 digs, three blocks and two aces. Across the two matches, she averaged 5.43 kills per set with a .460 hitting percentage.
A junior from St. Petersburg, Russia, Markova shined in the Orange’s matches against Miami and Florida State. The Syracuse middle blocker recorded a double-double in both matches, racking up a total of 53 kills, 29 digs and six blocks on the weekend. In the match against Miami, Markova posted 20 kills with a .326 hitting percentage and added 19 digs and three blocks. The junior’s week was highlighted by a career-best 33 kills in the match against Florida State, a contest in which she also had 10 digs and three blocks. Markova averaged 5.89 kills per set across the two matches.
Yardimici helped Miami to a 2-0 weekend with wins over Syracuse (3-1) and Boston College (3-0). A native of Istanbul, Turkey, the Hurricane rookie recorded 22 kills, 11 blocks, five digs and two aces on the weekend. In the victory over Syracuse, Yardimici posted 13 kills, four blocks, four digs and a .393 hitting percentage. The freshman followed the Syracuse match with a nine-kill, seven-block effort against the Eagles while hitting at a .389 clip.
