NC State’s Johnson, Duke’s Day-Wilson Earn ACC WBB Weekly Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) - NC State sophomore guard Diamond Johnson has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, and Duke guard Shayeann Day-Wilson is the ACC Freshman of the Week.

ACC women’s basketball weekly awards are voted on by the league’s Blue Ribbon Panel.

Johnson turned in a pair of stellar scoring outings to lead the Wolfpack to wins against No. 2 Maryland and Washington State in the Baha Mar Hoops Tournament last week. She tallied 17 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals in NC State’s 78-60 win against the Terrapins. Johnson followed that performance with a season-high 24 points and seven rebounds to power the Pack to the 62-34 win over the Cougars.

For the week, she averaged 20.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.0 steals per game. She shot 51% from the floor, including 7-for-13 from beyond the arc.

Highlighted by her career-high 26 points against Troy on Sunday, Day-Wilson tallied consecutive double-digit games to lead the Blue Devils to a 2-0 week. She was 6-for-10 from the floor with 14 points and five assists, as Duke defeated Appalachian State, 73-65. Day-Wilson was on fire in Sunday’s contest against the Trojans, draining 8-of-10 shots from 3-point range, which are the most by an ACC player in a game this season and matches the Duke freshman program record.

On the week, Day-Wilson averaged 20.0 points, 4.5 assists and 4.0 rebounds.

ACC women’s basketball action resumes this week with the 2021 Big Ten/ACC Challenge scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday. Twelve of the 14 games will air live on a linear television network, including all seven ACC home games.
