GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – NC State redshirt freshman Owen Trephan has been recognized as the first Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week of the 2021-22 season following an opening weekend that included a tournament title and wins over a pair of ranked opponents.
Trephan claimed first place in the heavyweight bracket as the No. 5 Wolfpack opened its season at The Citadel Open. The Summerville, South Carolina, native defeated teammate and 2021 ACC champion (and currently 18th-ranked) Deonte Wilson in the finals by a 10-3 score, following a 5-2 win over No. 30 Michael McAleavey of The Citadel in the semifinals. Both opponents were NCAA qualifiers last spring.
Trephan also scored a 3-1 overtime win over Duke starter Jonah Niesenbaum. In four tournament wins, Trephan outscored his opponents by a combined 40-9.
It added up to a career weekend for Trephan, who was the Wolfpack’s backup last year at heavyweight, competing only in extra matches, and never finished higher than third place in his six open tournaments two seasons ago.
