CARY, N.C. (theACC.com) – Clemson advanced to the championship match of the 2021 NCAA Men's College Cup after outlasting ACC rival Notre Dame on penalty kicks on Friday night in front of a sellout crowd of 10,132 at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina. The teams played to a 1-1 draw after 110 minutes of action, and Clemson prevailed on penalties, 5-3.
The tournament's No. 8 seed, Clemson will square off with No. 2 Washington for the national championship at 2 p.m. Sunday. ESPNU has the television broadcast.
Making its ninth Men's College Cup appearance, Clemson (15-5-2) is vying for its third national crown. The Tigers won national championships in 1984 and 1987.
The No. 4 national seed, Notre Dame (14-5-5) made its second Men's College Cup appearance in program history and its first since winning the 2013 NCAA Championship.
Clemson scored in the 11th minute on a beautiful strike from distance from Luis Felipe Fernandez-Salvador, but Notre Dame countered in the 21st minute. Following a Clemson foul in the box, Jack Lynn stepped to the spot and buried a penalty kick.
In the shootout, both teams converted on all of their attempts until Clemson goalkeeper George Marks denied the Tigers' fourth try. Justin Malou converted on Clemson's next attempt to send the Tigers to the championship game.
ACC teams have won 17 NCAA men’s soccer championships. The ACC has had at least one conference team in the NCAA Men’s College Cup in 20 of the last 21 seasons.
