Williams, Smith, Wesley Notch ACC Men’s Basketball Weekly Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Wake Forest graduate forward Alondes Williams has been selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week, while NC State guard Terquavion Smith and Notre Dame guard Blake Wesley were chosen as the ACC’s Co-Freshman of the Week in the ACC’s weekly men’s basketball honors for Dec. 13.

ACC men’s basketball weekly honors are determined by a vote of a 15-member media panel and announced on Mondays throughout the regular season.

Williams posted a historic performance in Wake Forest’s 79-53 win over USC Upstate on Saturday, joining Tim Duncan as the second Demon Deacon to record a triple-double. The Milwaukee, Wisconsin, native led the Demon Deacons with 16 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists in 32 minutes of playing time. The 14 rebounds and 10 assists both marked career highs. Duncan recorded 14 points, 15 rebounds and 10 blocks on Jan. 13, 1996, against Maryland.

Williams’ triple-double was the 35th triple-double in ACC history and second this season (Wendell Moore Jr., Duke, Nov. 12 vs. Army). The Demon Deacons improved to 9-1 on the season with the victory.

A native of Farmville, North Carolina, Smith was named the ACC’s Freshman of the Week for the second straight week. He averaged 17.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game in a win over Bethune-Cookman (65-48) and an overtime loss to then-No. 1 Purdue (82-72). Smith nailed six 3-pointers for the week (three in both games). He scored a career-high 21 points against the Boilermakers as the Wolfpack’s upset bid fell short in overtime. Thirteen of his points came in the second half to help NC State build a double-digit lead. Against Bethune-Cookman on Thursday, Smith recorded 14 points, four rebounds and two assists.

Wesley scored 14 points, grabbed three rebounds and dished out three assists in the Fighting Irish’s 66-62 triumph over then-No. 10 Kentucky on Saturday. The South Bend, Indiana, native hit the go-ahead jumper with 12 seconds remaining to snap a 62-all tie. He had a major impact on the game’s final moments, as he grabbed the defensive rebound to set up his game-winning shot, then found teammate Dane Goodwin for a breakaway dunk for the final points. He tied for the team lead in the game with 14 points, shooting 6-of-12 from the field, including 2-of-5 from 3-point range. Wesley currently is second in the ACC among true freshmen in scoring with 13.0 points per game.
