GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) - Georgia Tech fifth-year forward Lorela Cubaj has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, and Miami guard Lashae Dwyer is the ACC Freshman of the Week.
ACC women’s basketball weekly awards are voted on by the league’s Blue Ribbon Panel.
Cubaj led Georgia Tech to a pair of victories last week, including an upset over then-No. 3 UConn, 57-44, to snap the Huskies 240-game winning streak over unranked opponents. She recorded a game-high 13 rebounds with seven assists, five points, two steals and two blocks in the Yellow Jackets’ first win over a top-three opponent since 2009. With Cubaj protecting the paint, UConn scored fewer than 45 points for the first time since 2006.
Cubaj recorded her fourth-straight game with double-figure rebounds against Furman on Sunday as she pulled down 14 with six assists, five points, three blocks and three steals. The Terni, Italy, native ranks first in the ACC in rebounding with 12.5 per game and is fifth nationally.
Dwyer turned in a pair of stellar performances to lead Miami to a 2-0 week with wins over Arkansas Pine Bluff and Robert Morris. She scored eight points with five rebounds and two steals in the victory over the Golden Lions.
Against Robert Morris on Sunday, the Canadian scored a career-high 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting with six rebounds, five assists and five steals.
League teams return to action Wednesday evening with three games on the slate, headlined by No. 15 Duke hosting top-ranked South Carolina at 7 p.m. on ACC Network.
