Syracuse’s Hyman, Notre Dame’s Citron Earn ACC WBB Weekly Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) - Syracuse redshirt sophomore guard Teisha Hyman has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, and Notre Dame guard Sonia Citron is the ACC Freshman of the Week for the third time this season.

ACC women’s basketball weekly awards are voted on by the league’s Blue Ribbon Panel.

Hyman tallied a pair of career performances to lead Syracuse to two wins last week, including a 97-91 victory over No. 18 Ohio State in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The sophomore guard scored a career-high 30 points on 12-of-18 shooting and 4-of-5 from 3-point range with six assists to lift the Orange to their first ranked win of the season.

In Sunday’s rout of Central Connecticut State, the White Plains, New York, native nearly recorded the first-ever quadruple double -- men’s or women’s -- by a student-athlete from a Power 5 program. Hyman poured in 27 points with 15 assists, 11 steals and eight rebounds to record the fifth triple-double in Syracuse women’s basketball history and first since Tiana Mangakahia on Jan. 13, 2019. Her 11 steals are a program record for a single game, and her 15 assists are tied for second in a single game at Syracuse.

For the week, Hyman averaged a double-double with 28.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game, while adding 6.0 steals and 5.0 rebounds per contest. She shot an impressive 73.3% from the field (22-of-30) and was equally as good from behind the arc, connecting on 6-of-8 (75%).

For the third time this year, Citron earned ACC Freshman of the Week honors after leading Notre Dame in a 76-71 win at Michigan State in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge and a hard-fought loss at second-ranked UConn. She tallied a career-best 29 points in the victory against the Spartans, scoring 21 of her points in the second half. Citron connected on 9-of-12 shots, 3-of-4 from 3-point land and was a perfect 8-of-8 from the free-throw line in the win.

Hailing from Eastchester, New York, Citron led the Fighting Irish with 19 points and five rebounds in Sunday’s loss to the Huskies. The freshman averaged 24.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game last week.

ACC women’s basketball claimed the Big Ten/ACC Challenge for the 10th time last week, as the conference’s teams combined to win 10 of the 14 matchups. The ACC now owns a 10-1-3 all-time record in the event.

League teams return to action Tuesday evening, as Pitt welcomes Coppin State at 6 p.m. and Virginia hosts American at 7 p.m. with both games on ACC Network Extra. Virginia Tech is also in action at 7 p.m. with the Hokies traveling to Liberty in a contest that will air on ESPN+.
