GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) - NC State sophomore wing Jakia Brown-Turner has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, and North Carolina guard Deja Kelly is the ACC Freshman of the Week.
ACC women’s basketball weekly awards are voted on by the league’s Blue Ribbon Panel.
Brown-Turner averaged 23.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game to lead the Wolfpack to a pair of victories last week, including a 66-47 win at Wake Forest on Thursday and an 82-63 victory against rival North Carolina on Sunday. The sophomore opened the week with 21 points against the Demon Deacons on 9-of-14 shooting.
She tallied a career-high 25 points to lift NC State to the win against the Tar Heels in the Wolfpack’s annual Play 4 Kay game. A native of Oxon Hill, Maryland, Brown-Turner turned in a stellar shooting performance, as she connected on 10-of-16 attempts from the floor. She led the Pack in scoring in both games.
For the week, Brown-Turner shot 63.3% (19-30) from the floor and was 6-of-8 from 3-point range (75%).
Kelly helped the Tar Heels compile a 1-1 week, as North Carolina earned a 77-64 win at Clemson on Thursday before the loss at second-ranked NC State on Sunday. She scored 19 points against the Tigers, including a perfect 7-of-7 from the free-throw line.
Hailing from San Antonio, Texas, Kelly notched 14 points in the rivalry matchup with the Wolfpack to lead UNC in scoring.
She averaged 16.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals for the week.
ACC women’s basketball action returns Monday night, as Pitt hosts Notre Dame at 8 p.m. on ACC Network.
