Virginia Tech Grabs Lead on Second Day of Swimming at Men's ACC Championships

Notre Dame, Georgia Tech, Virginia and Louisville each claimed a race on the second day of swim competition at the 2021 Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships on Thursday evening at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
 
The Fighting Irish claimed the first gold, as Jack Hoagland secured the second straight 500 freestyle title for Notre Dame, clocking a time of 4:11.26.
 
Georgia Tech’s Caio Pumputis won the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:41.76. Pumputis placed second in the event in 2020 after winning it in 2019.
 
In the 50 freestyle final, Virginia’s Matt Brownstead took gold with a time of 18.88, becoming the first Cavalier swimmer to win the 50 free since Scot Robison in 2010. He touched just ahead of Pitt’s Blaise Vera (19.03) and Louisville’s Haridi Sameh (19.15).
 
Louisville won the ACC title 200 freestyle relay for the first time in school history as the team of Haridi Sameh, Nicolas Albiero, Tanner Cummings and Michael Eastman posted a time of 15.99.
 
With last week’s 3-meter and 1-meter diving scores factored in, Virginia Tech leads with 454 points. Louisville and NC State are tied for second with 428 points each, followed by North Carolina (350), Virginia (335), Florida State (320), Georgia Tech (278), Pitt (186), Notre Dame (179), Duke (162), Miami (120) and Boston College (98).
Action resumes Friday at 10 a.m. with the prelims for the 100 butterfly, 400 individual medley, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke. The finals for the swimming events, including the 400 medley relay, will begin at 6 p.m.


500 Freestyle Final
Jack Hoagland took gold in the 500 free after placing third last year, posting a time of 4:11.26. The Fighting Irish sophomore finished ahead of NC State’s Ross Dant (4:12.21) and Virginia’s Jack Walker (4:13.45).

200 Individual Medley Final
A 2019 champion in the 200 IM and runner-up in 2020, Caio Pumputis regained his title in the event in the 2021 ACC Championships with a time of 1:41.76. He finished ahead of Virginia Tech’s Carles Coll Marti (1:43.47) and Louisville’s Evgenii Somov (1:44.05).

50 Freestyle Final
Virginia’s Matt Brownstead won the 50 free title with a time of 18.88. The Cavalier freshman edged out Pitt’s Blaise Vera (19.03) and the 2020 ACC runner-up, Louisville’s Haridi Sameh (19.15).

Men’s 1-Meter Diving Finals (Feb. 18)
North Carolina's Anton Down-Jenkins took the gold in the 3-meter competition, posting a score of 425.85. Teammate Alex Hart placed second (384.45) and Georgia Tech's Ruben Lechuga finished third (375.45).

200 Freestyle Relay
The Louisville squad of Sameh, Nicolas Albiero, Tanner Cummings and Michael Eastman posted a winning time of 1:15.99 to take gold in the 200 free relay, the team’s first ACC title in the event. NC State placed second with a time of 1:16.33 and Virginia Tech finished in third (1:16.56).
