CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (theACC.com) –
Duke pulled off the sweep of the men’s and women’s team titles at the 17th ACC Fencing Championships on Sunday at Carmichael Arena in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. After the Blue Devil women rolled to the championship, the men earned their title in dramatic fashion after winning a fence-off tiebreaker.

Duke won its first ACC Women’s Team Championship in program history after victories against Boston College (20-7) and North Carolina (16-11). The Blue Devils’ foil squad was particularly strong, winning 15 of its 18 bouts.

Duke’s Zoe Superville was named the 2021 ACC Women’s Most Valuable Fencer. After posting a 13-0 record and winning the individual foil competition Saturday, Superville was 6-0 during the team championships.

The three men’s teams all finished with 1-1 records, prompting a three-team fence-off tiebreaker. UNC started the day with a 15-12 victory over Boston College, but the Eagles bounced back by topping Duke, 14-13, in a back-and-forth battle that came down to the final touch. The Blue Devils roared back with an 18-9 win over UNC to force the fence-off.

The lower two seeds, Duke and BC, faced off first, with the Blue Devils winning two of the three bouts to advance and face the top-seeded Tar Heels. Duke again won two of three to clinch the fence-off and the program’s second ACC title (2018).

After winning the epee individual championship Saturday and going 6-1 during the team competition, North Carolina freshman Reza Merchant was named the 2021 ACC Men’s Most Valuable Fencer.

Out of an abundance of caution, Notre Dame did not travel to Chapel Hill following positive tests, subsequent quarantining and contact tracing within the team. The program is adhering to the outlined protocols within the ACC Medical Advisory Group report, which is available on theACC.com (full report).

The 2021 NCAA Championships will run from March 25-28 at Multi-Sport Facility in University Park, Pennsylvania. Qualifying teams will be unveiled on March 18.
