Virginia Tech's Latona Named ACC Wrestler of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia Tech redshirt freshman Sam Latona has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week following his key victory in last Friday night’s top-10 showdown versus NC State.

Latona, ranked eighth nationally at 125 pounds, upset No. 4-ranked Jakob Camacho at the buzzer in the final and deciding match between unbeaten top-10 teams in Blacksburg.

Down 4-3 to defending ACC champion Camacho with seconds remaining in the match, Latona scored a takedown and a two-point near-fall just before the final horn sounded for a 7-4 win that tied the team score at 16-16. Based on overall match scoring criteria, the eighth-ranked Hokies claimed a 17-16 victory and at least a share of the ACC regular-season title for the first time since doing so three consecutive seasons from 2015 through 2017. The outcome snapped a 22-dual match NC State winning streak that dated back to 2019.

Latona, a native of Alabaster, Alabama, was also named the National Wrestler of the Week by The Open Mat. The ACC weekly honor is his second of the season after first being named Co-Wrestler of the Week on Jan. 12.
