ACC Tournament: Notes Florida State 69, North Carolina 66

2021 New York Life ACC Tournament
No. 2 Florida State 69, No. 6 North Carolina 66
Friday Semifinals
Postgame Notes

- Florida State (16-5) advances to Saturday’s 8:30 p.m. championship game versus No.  4 Georgia Tech (16-8).  The teams split during the regular season, with the Seminoles winning 74-61 in Tallahassee on Dec. 15, while the Yellow Jackets won 76-65 in Atlanta on Jan. 30.

- FSU will be seeking its second ACC Tournament championship and its third ACC title overall. The Seminoles captured the 2012 tournament in Atlanta and were recognized as ACC champions last year by virtue of their first-place finish after the COVID-19 pandemic forced cancellation of the 2020 tournament’s final three rounds.

- FSU will be appearing in the ACC Tournament championship game for the fourth time and for the first time at the Greensboro Coliseum. The Seminoles reached the 2009 finals at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta before falling to Duke, 79-69. FSU’s 2012 championship came at Atlanta’s Philips Arena, where they topped North Carolina, 85-82, in the title game. The Seminoles fell to Duke, 73-63, in the 2019 final at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte.

- FSU is 20-27 all-time in ACC Tournament games, including a 4-2 mark in the semifinals.

- Saturday night’s championship will mark the first time in 31 years that the ACC Tournament championship game will not include at least one school from the state of North Carolina. Georgia Tech, led by MVP Brian Oliver, defeated Virginia in the 1990 title game in Charlotte.

- Florida State center Balsa Koprivica led all scorers Friday night with 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor and all rebounders with a career-high 11. The double-double was the sophomore’s second of the season.

- UNC (18-10) slipped to 35-17 all-time in ACC Tournament semifinal appearances. The Tar Heels’ overall ACC tourney record now stands at 104-49.

- After overcoming a 12-point halftime deficit in a win over FSU in the regular-season meeting between the teams on Feb. 27 in Chapel Hill, UNC overcame an 11-point halftime deficit Friday night and briefly held a five-point lead midway through the second half. But the Tar Heels were just 14-for-25 from the foul line, and the Seminoles limited the Tar Heels to a 33.8 shooting night from the floor.

- Garrison Brooks grabbed a team-high eight rebounds for UNC, which came up short despite holding a 42-39 overall edge on the boards and a 21-10 advantage on offensive rebounds. The Tar Heels had 61 total offensive rebounds in their 2021 ACC Tournament games, compared to 32 for their opponents.
