Pitt’s Mertz, Duke’s Cosme Earn ACC Women’s Soccer Weekly Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) - Pitt’s Landy Mertz is the Atlantic Coast Conference women’s soccer offensive player of the week, and Duke’s Caitlin Cosme is the defensive player of the week.

Mertz had quite the debut in a Panthers’ uniform on Sunday, as she scored a pair of goals in Pitt’s 3-0 win against Duquesne. A sophomore transfer from Dayton and Pittsburgh native, Mertz found the back of the net in the 60th minute and again in the 79th minute.

The win gave Pitt its 10th win of the season, tying the 1995 team for the program record for most victories in a single season. It also guaranteed the 2020-21 team will have the highest winning percentage in program history.

Cosme recorded a goal and an assist in 79 minutes of action on Saturday, as Duke opened its spring slate with a 3-0 victory at UNCW. The New Hyde Park, New York, native scored her fourth goal of the season by heading in a corner kick in the 18th minute to give the Blue Devils a 2-0 advantage.

The senior recorded her first career assist in the second half, setting up Grace Watkins' first collegiate goal to make it 3-0. Cosme helped Duke collect its sixth shutout win of the season, limiting UNCW to one shot in the match.

ACC women’s soccer action returns Friday evening, as Virginia travels to Old Dominion for a 5 p.m. kickoff.
