First Round 2021 New York Life ACC Tournament
Greensboro, N.C.
- Miami (9-16) advances to Wednesday’s 2:30 p.m. second-round game versus No. 5 seed Clemson (16-6). The Tigers won both regular-season meetings between the teams – 66-65 at Coral Gables on Jan. 2 and 66-58 at Clemson on Feb. 27.
- With Tuesday’s result following an 80-76 victory over Boston College in last Saturday’s regular-season finale, the Hurricanes have posted consecutive wins since winning three straight games to open the season (vs. North Florida on 11/29, vs. Stetson on 12/4 and vs. Purdue on 12/8).
- The Hurricanes are now 10-6 in all-time ACC Tournament play in Greensboro and 6-9 elsewhere. The 10 victories are eight more ACC tourney wins than Miami has in any other city, and Greensboro is the only place in which the Hurricanes are over .500. Greensboro was the site of Miami’s lone ACC Tournament championship in 2013.
- Miami won at least one ACC Tournament game in eight (8) of head coach Jim Larrañaga’s 10 seasons and has reached the quarterfinals six times.
- Miami’s win improved the No. 13 seed’s record vs. the No. 12 seed in the opening round of the ACC tourney to 2-6.
- Sophomore Isaiah Wong led five Hurricanes scoring in double figures on Tuesday with 20 points to go with two rebounds and four assists. Wong is gunning to become just the 10th ACC underclassman in the last 20 years to average at least 17.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists.
- With 14 points and nine rebounds, Miami sophomore forward Anthony Walker just missed his fourth double-double of the season. Walker has scored in double figures in six of his last seven games,
- Pitt freshman Femi Odukale led all scorers with a career-high 28 points. Odukale’s previous high prior to Tuesday had been 18 points versus NC State on Feb. 28. It marked his fourth game this season scoring in double figures.
- Nike Sibande added 24 points for the Panthers (10-12), marking his second time in three games scoring at least 23 points. With 11 points and 10 rebounds, Justin Champagnie pushed his season ACC-leading double-doubles total to 14.
- The Panthers are 7-7 in ACC Tournament play, including a 3-2 mark in first-round action. Pitt is 2-3 in the conference tournament under head coach Jeff Capel with a 2-1 mark in opening-round contests.
