GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – NCAA champion weight thrower Makenli Forrest of Louisville and Bowerman Watch List hurdler Trey Cunningham of Florida State have been named ACC Scholar-Athletes of the Year for Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Track and Field and lead the sport’s All-ACC Academic Teams announced on Tuesday.
This year’s Men’s and Women’s All-ACC Academic Indoor Track and Field Teams include close to 100 student-athletes who earned All-ACC honors and combined for 45 All-America placements at last month’s NCAA Championships.
Forrest, who was also named a 2021 ACC Postgraduate Scholar and voted the ACC Women’s Field Performer of the Year, registered a personal-best and Louisville school-record mark of 23.26 meters (76-3.75) to claim the gold medal on the opening day of the 2021 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 11 in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The mark shattered the Louisville school record of 22.76m (74-8.25) and ranked as the top collegiate indoor throw this year.
Forrest also took the gold medal at the ACC Championships with a winning throw of 22.46m (73-8.25). The Ellenwood, Georgia, native maintains a 3.6 career GPA while majoring in exercise science. Forrest is a six-time member of the Louisville Athletic Director’s Honor Roll and a four-time dean’s list student. She was named a Dean’s Scholar in 2020 and is repeat member of the All-ACC Academic Indoor Track and Field Academic Team.
Florida State’s Cunningham placed third in the 60-meter hurdles at the NCAA Indoor Championships, finishing with a time of 7.53 seconds. The senior from Winfield, Alabama, finished just .02 from claiming the NCAA gold medal. Cunningham posted his fourth first-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles at the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships with a time of 7.67. He became the first athlete to win four straight ACC titles in the 60-meter hurdles and is one of just four male athletes in ACC history to win four indoor gold medals in any event.
The USTFCCCA recently included Cunningham on its 10-man updated watch list for The Bowerman, which is awarded annually to the top track and field athlete in the college ranks. The watch list distinction is the sixth for Cunningham, who was also named the ACC Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2020. The ACC Postgraduate Scholarship recipient majors in public relations and posted a 3.9 GPA during the most recent fall semester.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September of 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their careers, as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
