ACC Announces 2021 Women’s Tennis Awards

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – North Carolina’s Sara Daavettila has been selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Year and highlights the 2021 All-ACC Team.

The honors, announced Thursday, were determined by a vote of the league’s head coaches.

Virginia’s Emma Navarro was named the Freshman of the Year, and North Carolina head coach Brian Kalbas was selected as the Coach of the Year.

Daavettila helped lead the Tar Heels to the 2021 ACC Women’s Tennis Championship. The senior from Williamston, Michigan, is currently ranked No. 2 in the nation and has been ranked as high as No. 1 this season. Daavettila is 15-1 in dual matches on the year, with an 8-1 record against all ranked opponents, including a 3-0 mark against top-10 foes. She was named the ACC Player of the Week or Co-Player four times this past season, the most of any ACC student-athlete.

A rookie from Charleston, South Carolina, Navarro compiled a 17-1 dual match record. She owns an 8-1 mark against top-50 opponents and helped Virginia to a top-four seed at the ACC Championships. Navarro is currently ranked the No. 3 singles player in the country and has been ranked as high as No. 1. She was a six-time ACC Freshman or Co-Freshman of the Week this season and was named both Player and Freshman of the Week twice.

Kalbas guided UNC to its fifth straight ACC title. The Tar Heels are undefeated and won the 2021 ITA Indoor National Title, defeating Texas, Georgia and Pepperdine on the way, all currently ranked No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 in the nation, respectively. North Carolina is 11-0 this season against opponents currently ranked in the ITA’s top 25.

The NCAA Women’s Tennis Selection show is set for Monday, May 3 at 6 p.m. on the NCAA.com.
