Miami’s Perez-Somarriba Leads All-ACC Academic Women’s Tennis Team

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Miami’s Estela Perez-Somarriba has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year and headlines the sport’s All-ACC Academic Team announced Tuesday.

A senior from Madrid, Spain, Perez-Somarriba majors in sport administration. She was the 2021 ITA National Player of the Year and the runner-up in the 2021 NCAA Singles Championship. Perez-Somarriba was also an ITA All-American, a member of the All-ACC First Team and a three-time ACC Player of the Week for the 2021 season.

ACC Champion North Carolina, Virginia and Wake Forest lead the league with five players each on the academic team, followed by Duke, Florida State, NC State and Notre Dame with four each. Miami and Louisville each had three selections on the team.

Twenty-three members of the team were named All-Americans and the same number earned All-ACC distinction.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports.

Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career for undergraduate students. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.

The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
