GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Georgia Tech junior outside hitter Julia Bergmann has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Volleyball Player of the Week, while teammate Bianca Bertolino has been selected as the Freshman of the Week.
Bergmann, the AVCA Division I Player of the Week, led the way for Georgia Tech in a 3-0 weekend at the UCF Challenge. The Yellow Jackets defeated No. 12 Penn State, 3-1, and earned victories over host UCF (3-1) and St. John’s (3-0) at the tournament. The Munich, Germany, native garnered tournament MVP honors after piling up 53 kills with a .325 hitting percentage, 30 digs, five service aces and four blocks. Bergmann maintained an all-around steady presence through each match, tallying at least 16 kills and nine digs in each contest. She led the team in kills against UCF (21) and St. Johns (16) and was second on the squad in kills against Penn State (16). Bergmann posted a pair of double-doubles over the weekend as she tallied 11 digs against UCF, 10 digs against St. John’s and was one dig shy of finishing with three straight double-doubles with nine digs against Penn State.
An outside hitter from San Guillermo-Santa Fe, Argentina, Bertolino compiled 34 kills, 32 digs, seven blocks and three aces at the UCF Challenge. The rookie began her collegiate career with six kills, 10 digs and two total blocks in her collegiate debut against Penn State. She earned her first double-double in the following match with UCF, picking up 13 kills, 14 digs and three blocks. Against St. John’s on Saturday, Bertolino posted the second-most kills on the squad with 15 and recorded a team-leading .419 hitting percentage, in addition to eight digs, a pair of aces and seven blocks.
