GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Pitt junior midfielder Veljko Petkovic has been tabbed the first ACC Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for the 2021 season, while Clemson goalkeeper George Marks was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Week.
Petkovic had a career day in No. 3 Pitt’s 7-0 victory over Duquesne last Thursday in the season opener, contributing to four goals with two goals and added two assists for a career-high six points. The junior from Queens, New York, scored two goals in a span of one minute and eight seconds, setting a school record for fastest consecutive goals scored by the same player.
Marks was a key force in a pair of wins last week. With Clemson playing a man down Thursday against St. John’s, he stepped up to help preserve a 2-1 win, making a fantastic leaping save on a free kick from just outside the box with four minutes remaining. In Clemson's 5-0 win over USC Upstate on Sunday, the senior from Raleigh, North Carolina, led the organized defense and made four saves, including a key save late in the first half to keep the Tigers’ lead at 2-0. The two victories gave Marks 33 for his career as he moved into sixth place on the Tigers’ all-time goalkeeper wins list.
The Labor Day weekend will be a busy one, with 20 matches on the docket. The slate begins Thursday with a pair of ACC teams in action, as Virginia entertains High Point and Duke travels to Michigan. The long weekend is capped Monday evening as Clemson entertains South Florida in a 7 p.m. match that airs on ACC Network.
