GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Wake Forest junior forward Jake LaRavia has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week, while Duke forward Paolo Banchero and Notre Dame guard Blake Wesley are Co-Freshman of the Week in the ACC’s weekly men’s basketball honors for Jan. 24.
Banchero was named Freshman of the Week for the second week in a row and the fifth time this season. Wesley earned the distinction for the third time this season.
ACC men’s basketball weekly honors are determined by a vote of a 15-member media panel and announced on Mondays throughout the regular season.
LaRavia averaged 22.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 6.5 assists in wins over Georgia Tech (80-64) and North Carolina (98-76). The Indianapolis native put up 31 points and 10 rebounds Saturday against UNC, becoming just the fourth player over the past 10 years (and first non-Duke player) to post 30 points and 10 rebounds versus the Tar Heels (Jabari Parker, RJ Barrett, and Zion Williamson). The 22-point victory was Wake’s largest margin of victory against UNC since the 2001-02 season. On Wednesday at Georgia Tech, LaRavia posted 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting while dishing out a career-high nine assists.
Banchero averaged a double-double against Florida State and Syracuse with 17.5 points and 12.5 rebounds while shooting 54.5% from the field. A native of Seattle, he scored 20 points with 12 rebounds in a one-point overtime loss at FSU (79-78) on Tuesday, going 6-of-11 from the field and 7-of-9 from the free throw line with career highs in rebounds (12) and assists (seven). He followed that effort with 15 points, a career-high 13 rebounds and four assists Saturday in a 79-59 win over Syracuse. Banchero leads the ACC in scoring in conference play (20.0), is second in rebounding (9.0) and fifth in field goal percentage (53.2%). At 17.9 points per game overall, he leads all true freshmen nationally.
Wesley averaged 17.5 points per game and shot 54% from the field as the Fighting Irish defeated Howard (71-68) and Louisville (82-70) on the road. The South Bend, Indiana, native had a 22-point outburst at Louisville to help Notre Dame improve to 5-2 in ACC play. Wesley keyed a 20-3 run by the Irish at UofL, scoring nine consecutive points with back-to-back three-point field goals, then an old-school and-one three-point play. He also helped the Irish fight off Howard in the MLK Classic on Monday with 13 points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists. Wesley has set the Notre Dame true freshman record with 15 consecutive games of double-digit scoring performances.
