GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Notre Dame senior Andrew Machovec has been chosen the ACC Men’s Fencer of the Week, while his teammate, freshman Kaylin Sin Yan Hsieh, was named ACC Women’s Fencer of the Week.
A native of East Rockaway, New York, Machovec (foil) was dominant last weekend at the St. John’s Invitational and Philadelphia Invitational, posting an unblemished 18-0 individual record against strong competition. At the St. John’s Invitational, he went 3-0 in all three of the top-ranked Fighting Irish’s victories against No. 2 Columbia (14-13), No. 3 Ohio State (16-11) and No. 8 St. John’s (14-13). He duplicated that output the next day at the Philadelphia Invitational, going 3-0 in each of the Irish’s team wins over No. 4 Princeton (20-7), No. 10 Yale (18-9) and NYU (17-10).
Hsieh (epee) went 13-2 in five Notre Dame matches at the St. John’s Invitational and Philadelphia Invitational. The Hong Kong native went 3-0 in the Fighting Irish’s team wins over No. 5 Ohio State (19-8), No. 4 Harvard (20-7) and No. 2 Columbia (15-12). She also posted a 2-1 record in a win over No. 11 St. John’s (21-6) as well as a loss to No. 3 Princeton (19-8).
