• Four ACC teams remain among the top 20 of the NWCA rankings as the season heads into week three. NC State holds the No. 9 spot, followed by No. 11 Virginia Tech, No. 16 North Carolina and No. 17 Pitt.
• UNC hosted No. 5 Michigan in Boshamer Stadium, with the mat placed over home plate for a unique experience, before falling to the Wolverines 23-12 on Sunday afternoon. The “Doubles on the Diamond” event marked the first time that a wrestling match had been held at the home of Tar Heel Baseball. The dual boasted a crowd of 1,139 cheering on the Tar Heels in a top-20 matchup against the Wolverines. The match came two days after UNC defeated Campbell in the inaugural “Battle at the Bragg,” which was held at Fort Bragg’s Pope Airfield.
• Pitt opened the dual portion of its schedule with an impressive 36-0 win at Cleveland State. Eight Panthers scored at least nine points in their respective matches, with six Pitt wrestlers securing bonus-point major decision wins.
• Six members of the Virginia wrestling team claimed championships at Appalachian State last Saturday (Nov. 12) to lead a group of 24 place-winners in the day of competition. Two of the six champions came in the Mountaineer Invitational competition – an invited tournament – with Neil Antrassian claiming the title at 184 pounds, while Michael Battista took first at 197 pounds. Four other wrestlers claimed titles in the open bracket of the tournament: Keyveon Roller (133), Nick Hamilton (165), Rocco Contino (174) and Jessie Knight (285).
• The 157-pound InterMat rankings feature four ACC wrestlers among the top 11, led by Virginia Tech's No. 5 Bryce Andonian, last season's ACC runner-up at 149 pounds. Defending ACC 157-pound champion Ed Scott of NC State ranks sixth, followed at No. 7 by UNC's Austin O'Connor, last season's ACC runner-up at 157 and the 2021 national champion at 149.
ACC Wrestler of the Week
Virginia Tech freshman Caleb Henson (above) was selected as the ACC Wrestler of the Week after his 5-3 sudden victory upset over NCAA finalist and two-time All-American, No. 2 Sammy Sasso of Ohio State last Friday night in Columbus, Ohio.
Henson – ranked No. 27 at the time – defeated Sasso to start the top-10 matchup dual between the No. 10 Hokies and No. 4 Buckeyes at the Covelli Center. Henson trailed the bout early but managed to garner an escape and a late takedown in the third period to force overtime. Henson then went on the attack before scrambling through for the eventual winning takedown in the freshman's first collegiate start.
The Cartersville, Georgia native moves to 6-0 on the season and climbs to No. 12 and No. 9 in the latest InterMat and FloWrestling rankings, respectively.
