UNC’s Gray, UVa’s Nunes Earn ACC Men’s Lacrosse Weekly Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – North Carolina graduate attackman Chris Gray was tabbed the ACC Offensive Player of the Week and Virginia freshman goalie Matthew Nunes earned Defensive Player of the Week in the latest ACC weekly men’s lacrosse honors.

A native of Wading River, New York, Gray led the Tar Heels to season-opening wins over Richmond and Colgate with seven total goals and four assists. He recorded a hat trick in both games. Gray also collected three ground balls and caused two turnovers. He extended his multi-goal game streak to three dating back to last season. Has scored two or more goals in 14 career home games at UNC.

Nunes turned away 16 shots in UVA’s 11-10 win over High Point on Sunday. He registered seven saves in the opening quarter against the Panthers. A native of The Woodlands, Texas, Nunes produced two critical saves with under 2:15 to play, both with UVa clinging to a one-goal lead. He made his 16th and final save of the game with 20 seconds remaining after High Point took an open shot in transition from just above the crease. His 16 saves are tied for the most by any player in the ACC so far this season. Nunes also collected two ground balls.

ACC teams hold five of the top 10 spots in the USILA/Dynamic 2022 Men’s Coaches poll this week: Virginia (2), North Carolina (4), Notre Dame (5), Duke (7) and Syracuse (9). Notre Dame kicks off its season on Saturday night against Detroit Mercy.
