DETROIT (theACC.com) – Highlighted by silver medals from North Carolina’s Kizhan Clarke and Virginia Tech’s Mekhi Lewis, the Atlantic Coast Conference closed out the 2022 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships with four podium finishes and 10 total All-America honors.
 
Clarke reached the finals of the 141-pound weight class as the No. 15 seed before dropping a 10-3 decision to No. 1 seed and two-time champion Nick Lee of Penn State on Saturday night.
 
Lewis, seeded No. 2 at 174 pounds, also faced a title bout against a top-seeded defending national champion in Penn State’s Carter Starocci. The pair wrestled into a second overtime before Starocci’s riding-time advantage broke a 5-5 deadlock and decided the issue.
 
Both Lee and Starocci capped off unbeaten individual seasons in keying the Nittany Lions to their 10th NCAA team title. Clarke, in law school at UNC after a successful undergrad career at American, closed out a 21-4 season. Virginia Tech’s Lewis (24-2) fell just short in his bid to add a second NCAA title to his long list of collegiate accolades after taking the gold medal at 165 pounds in 2019.
 
Two ACC wrestlers finished strong in Saturday’s consolation round to earn bronze medals, as NC State’s Hayden Hidlay capped a stellar career with a third-place finish at 174 pounds, and Virginia Tech’s Bryce Andonian took third place at 149.
 
Including the four medalists, the following ACC wrestlers earned All-America honors (top eight in their respective weight classes):

133 – Korbin Myers, Virginia Tech – 6th
141 – Cole Matthews, Pitt – 5th
141 – Kizhan Clarke, North Carolina – 2nd
149 – Bryce Andonian, Virginia Tech – 3rd
149 – Tariq Wilson, NC State – 7th
157 – Austin O’Connor, North Carolina – 8th
174 – Mekhi Lewis, Virginia Tech – 2nd
174 – Hayden Hidlay, NC State – 3rd
174 – Clay Lautt, North Carolina – 8th
184 – Trent Hidlay, NC State – 5th
 
Hayden Hidlay became a five-time All-American, while both Wilson and UNC’s O’Connor are All-Americans for the fourth time.
  
Penn State cruised to the team championship with 131.5 points, more than 36 points ahead of second-place Michigan (95). The ACC placed two teams among the top 10 and three among the top 20, with scoring as follows:
