GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – NC State 184-pound redshirt sophomore Trent Hidlay has been named the 2021-22 Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestling Scholar-Athlete of the Year and heads up the sport’s All-ACC Academic Team announced on Thursday.
Hidlay helped lead the Wolfpack to its fourth straight ACC Championship by winning the gold medal in his weight class for the second consecutive year. He followed up with a fifth-place All-America finish at the NCAA Championships last month in Detroit. The Lewistown, Pennsylvania, native finished the season with a 21-2 record that included a 13-0 mark in dual competition and an unbeaten mark against ACC opponents. He owns a 54-8 record for his career.
Academically, Hidlay has maintained a 4.0 GPA while pursuing a degree in business administration. Inducted into the inaugural class of NC State’s Chi Alpha Sigma (National Honor Society), Hidlay has been named a 2021 and 2022 NWCA Scholar All-American in addition to his three-time selection to the All-ACC Academic Wrestling Team. He is eligible for his fourth selection to the ACC Academic Honor Roll.
Each of the 23 members of this year’s All-ACC Academic Team also qualified for the 2022 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. Five earned All-America honors, including five-time NC State All-American Hayden Hidlay, Trent’s older brother and the 2020 ACC Wrestling Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Four-time All-America honorees Austin O’Connor (North Carolina) and Tariq Wilson (NC State) are also part of this year’s All-ACC Academic Wrestling Team, along with two-time All-American Korbin Myers of Virginia Tech.
Each of the ACC’s six wrestling programs placed multiple student-athletes on this year’s All-ACC Wrestling Academic Team.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September of 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their careers, as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
