SOUTH BEND, Ind. (theACC.com) – The top two ranked teams in the nation, North Carolina and Boston College, moved on to the ACC Women’s Lacrosse Championship game with semifinal victories on Sunday at Arlotta Stadium in South Bend, Indiana. The tournament’s top seed, No. 1-ranked North Carolina held off No. 20 Notre Dame, 14-13, in the opener, and No. 2 Boston College knocked off No. 16 Virginia, 20-12, in the second semifinal.
The championship game will be played on Saturday, May 7, with first draw at 6 p.m. at Dorrance Field in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. ACC Network will have the broadcast.
North Carolina won its 17th consecutive ACC Tournament game and advanced to the ACC Championship game for the seventh straight year and 11th time in the last 12 years. Boston College will make its third ACC Championship game appearance in the last four tournaments and is aiming for its first league title.
No. 1 North Carolina 14, No. 5 Notre Dame 13
The Tar Heels (17-0) overcame an early deficit, then built a six-goal lead before holding off a fourth-quarter comeback from the Fighting Irish (9-9).
For the second straight game, Scottie Rose Growney led UNC in goals, scoring four. She now has nine scores in the tournament. In her return to South Bend, Andie Aldave recorded a hat trick and recorded three draw controls. A graduate transfer, Aldave played her first four years with the Fighting Irish. Jamie Ortega added a pair of assists. Her two points Sunday pulled her within three of Maryland’s Jen Adams (445 points) for the ACC’s all-time lead and second place in NCAA history.
Taylor Moreno made a dozen saves in goal for UNC, including two key stops in the game’s waning minutes. Jackie Wolak had a big game for Notre Dame, totaling six points on a team-high four goals and two assists.
UNC quickly faced its largest deficit this season, as the Fighting Irish bolted to a 5-0 advantage after just over seven minutes of play. After Notre Dame’s Mary Kelly Doherty scored with 7:53 left in the first, Growney responded just eight seconds later, starting a Tar Heel scoring avalanche. UNC outscored the Fighting Irish 12-1 over the next 30 minutes in taking a 12-6 lead midway through the third quarter.
Notre Dame countered with six of the next seven goals, cutting it to a one-goal deficit, 13-12, on a Wolak tally with 6:32 remaining. Growney pushed the lead back to two with a goal with 5:37 remaining. Wolak’s goal with 1:38 left pulled ND back within a goal, but UNC won the ensuing faceoff and ran out the clock.
No. 2 Boston College 20, No. 6 Virginia 12
Cassidy Weeks scored a career-high six goals, and Boston College (16-2) pulled away in the second half to reach the championship game. Belle Smith recorded a hat trick as well as six assists, while Jenn Medjid scored a hat trick.
BC’s Charlotte North scored a pair of goals to move within three of the all-time NCAA record. North now has 338, just behind Courtney Murphy of Stony Brook (341).
Ashlyn McGovern led Virginia (9-9) with four goals on four shots.
Virginia pulled withing three goals, 14-11, on a Kate Miller score with 2:40 left in the third quarter. Boston College’s defense buckled down from there, holding Virginia to just one goal over the game’s final 17:39.
The Eagles dominated in the draw circle, winning 21 of 33 draw controls, and BC also held a 40-21 edge in shots.
